The Electron Microscopy Service offers a variety of equipment and techniques for the preparation, imaging and analysis of biological samples (cell and bacterial cultures, cell fractions, proteins, viruses, animal and plant tissues) by transmission electron microscopy.

Techniques offered include chemical fixation and inclusion in epoxy and acrylic resins, cryofixation (plunge freezing, high pressure freezing), freeze substitution and inclusion in low temperature resins, ultramicrotomy, negative staining, immunonegative staining, immunolabeling, in situ hybridization and conventional transmission electron microscopy.

The aim of this service is to provide scientific and technical support to researchers of CNB and public or private institutions, by advising on the most appropriate techniques and offering specialized sample preparation, performing microscopy, data collection and support for the interpretation of the data.

Equipment and Services

The service is equipped with a 100 kV transmission electron microscope JEOL JEM 1400 Flash with a Gatan One View digital camera. For sample processing, the facility has the following specialized equipment:

  • Reichert Ultracut E ultramicrotome
  • Leica UC6-FC6 cryo-ultramicrotome with a Leica DFC 450 Camera
  • Leica AFS2 automatic freeze substitution system
  • Leica AC 600 carbon coating equipment
