The inmunology and oncology department offers a Cell Culture and Labware Recycling Facility that provides the technical and scientific equipment and necessary resources to all the research laboratories at the Institute that request it.
Personnel at the Facility are responsible for the collection of the used labware, for its decontamination and cleaning and for its proper storage, making it available for the collection by the investigators. Our staff is also in charge of the decontamination of all the waste generated in these laboratories.
The Facility offers permanent stocks of the most common media cell culture as well as for microbiology, the preparation of custom media and buffers.
The Facility also offers a test for Mycoplasma detection in cell culture.
Equipment
The duties of the Facility are focused on:
1. LABWARE PROCESSING AND RECYCLING
2. MEDIA AND BUFFER PREPARATION
3. MANAGEMENT OF CELL CULTURE LABORATORIES
4. MYCOPLASMA DETECTION.
In these labs the facility’s staff is responsible for:
• Stock management and purchasing of the products required for cell culture media preparation.
• Purchasing management of all the required equipment.
• Preparation, sterilization and monitoring of the media and buffer solutions used in tissue culture, according to stablished protocols.Sterilization by either running the appropriate autoclave cycle or through 0.22 µm membrane filtration.
• Controlling the proper operation and maintenance of all the equipment in the cell culture labs (hoods, incubators, refrigerators…)
• Monitoring the cleanliness of the laboratories and their equipment.
• General maintenance of the laboratories, removing plastic and glass waste and supplying clean, sterilized labware.
• Elaboration of cleaning and maintenance protocols.
• Elaboration of standard rules for the appropriate use of the facilities.
• Accounting and billing the different groups.
Mycoplasma detection in cell lines and media is carried out through a colorimetric assay, and is done periodically. Antibiotics and protocols to clean the affected cell lines are provided by the Facility.
The facility has the follow equipment:
three autoclaves, two horizontal flow cabnes, , two dishwashers and two stoves for drying and sterilization material.
