Investigadores del CNB-CSIC participan en la coalición internacional Covid19-MS para seguir los tratamientos y efectos del SARS-CoV2 en sangre de pacientes infectados

  • La coalición COVID19-MS cuenta con más de 500 científicos de 18 países que compartirán datos sobre COVID-19 obtenidos mediante técnicas de espectrometría de masas que examinan la sangre en busca de biomarcadores para el mejor tratamiento de los pacientes.

La nueva coalición COVID-19 MS, coordinada desde la Universidad de Manchester, está formada por los principales expertos en espectrometría de masas del mundo. Su objetivo es la puesta en común de los avances que permitan refinar las aproximaciones experimentales y las opciones de tratamiento, determinar los requisitos de aislamiento y acelerar los requisitos de medidas en nuevos programas de desarrollo terapéutico tanto para COVID-19 como en futuras amenazas. El anuncio de la nueva coalición se ha hecho a traves de una carta publicada en la revista The Lancet.

La investigadora Perdita Barran, directora del Centro de espectrometría de masas colaborativa Michael Barber en la Universidad de Manchester, es la coordinadora de esta coalición junto a la profesora Clare Mills. “Al cooperar de esta manera, los científicos que trabajan en la coalición tendrán acceso a muchas más fuentes de datos de todo el mundo. Estaremos combinando nuestra experiencia y creemos que podremos trabajar mucho más rápido y tener un impacto en una variedad de prioridades; desde las pruebas hasta el tratamiento y la vacunación ".

Fernando Corrales, investigador del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas en el CNB (CNB-CSIC) y coordinador de la Red de Laboratorios de Proteómica (ProteoRed-ISCIII) del Instituto de Salud Carlos III es uno de los puntos de contactos en España junto a la investigadora del IRB Marta Vilaseca. Corrales, que además lidera un proyecto financiado por el CSIC para la investigación de la interacción entre el virus y el hospedador a nivel proteómico destaca la “la creación e esta coalición como un ejemplo más de la gran colaboración científica que esta pandemia ha generado, permitiendo el acceso a los nuevos datos de manera muy rápida para desarrollar soluciones globales de manera prioritaria”.

Además del CNB, otras 10 instituciones españolas como el Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria del Hospital de Santiago de Compostela, el Instituto de Investigación Biomédica (IRB) de Barcelona, el Instituto de Investigación de la Fundación Josep Carreras, el Parque Científico de Barcelona, las Universidades de Murcia, y del País Vasco así como Amsbiopharma y Fossil Ion Technology SL están presentes en esta coalición.

El valor de la espectrometría de masas en seguimiento de la infección y tratamientos terapéuticos

La espectrometría de masas (MS) es una técnica de análisis que permite determinar la distribución de moléculas de una sustancia en función de su masa. Aplicado a la biomedicina, se utiliza para medir cuales son las moléculas de la sangre de un paciente y sus cambios a medida que la infección progresa. Estas mediciones proporcionan datos de diagnóstico precisos y reproducibles a nivel molecular que pueden complementar la información de los estudios genómicos que pueden resultar de gran utilidad en el caso de la pandemia de COVID19.

Identificando qué vías biológicas se alteran a medida que avanza la enfermedad y considerando los factores de riesgo genéticos, la espectrometría de masas proporcionará evidencia crucial de las diferentes respuestas a la infección.

Desde la coalición COVID19 se buscarán biomarcadores que determinen cómo responderá un individuo al virus y ayudarán a los laboratorios hospitalarios a predecir el resultado de la enfermedad y orientar el tratamiento en consecuencia. Además, la espectrometría de masas ayudará en el desarrollo de tratamientos efectivos mediante estudios específicos que midan la disminución de estos marcadores.

Este consorcio también abordará la determinación de la estructura de antígenos virales como la proteína Spike del coronavirus. Mediante MS se puede mapear la compleja red de glucósidos que recubren la superficie de la proteína Spike y del receptor humano. Los socios de la coalición también están trabajando para identificar las interacciones del virus con la célula y la forma de entrada del ARN viral en la célula cuya determinación es vital en el desarrollo de prototipos de vacunas.
