The scientist presides this institution since 2012 when he was first elected. Now, he has renewed his position for three more years. Under his presidency, Mariano Esteban has opted for an active Academy, open to society, where research and study of the pharmaceutical sciences are fostered, as well as everything related to medicine and human health.
As stated by the president, the Academy should continue its efforts to move closer to the society. "We want to communicate to society the opinion of the academy. We must join forces with other pharmaceutical institutions to make our voice heard in society and politicians" he has said in his opening speech of the course.
Mariano Esteban is a pioneer in the field of vaccines and is worth noting his work with viral and parasitic diseases such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, chikungunya, malaria and leishmaniosis. He was director of the CNB from 1992 to 2003, where he continues his research activities on vaccines against prevalent human diseases.
