Why do I propose you to join my group to study cell division?
The components that form the septation machinery have to interact with each other to produce the bacterial septum. Moreover, they have to be synthetised in the correct amounts and at the correct time.
Proteomics and functional genomics will provide answers to many of the questions that, as a result of research in the molecular genetics of bacterial septation, have been generated in the past decade. New questions will arise, and all the answers will help us to understand how the essential process of cell division takes place in a single cell.
Our results will help us to discover new targets that may block cell proliferation when inhibited. They will supply the foundations to fuel the discovery of new drugs to curb bacterial infection.What will I ask from you?
First I ask that you have a degree in Biology, Biochemistry or other related biomedical field. I will then consider your past performance, the average marks that you obtained. I prefer persons that are brilliant, and that have shown that they are so by obtaining the highest possible marks in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology.
Mind you, that you consider yourself highly motivated and interested in research IS NOT an asset, you should have proven it.
If you have been already engaged in research I will value your publications.
If you are selected I will ask you to exercise your mind and be critical concerning first your own work and also the results already published. If your command of English is poor you will be asked to improve it. Our bibliographic seminars are ALWAYS conducted in English.
This position is only suitable for candidates aiming seriously at pursuing a career in scientific research, regardless of the difficulties. It is expected that after your thesis you will apply for a postdoctoral stay at another top rated group, either in Spain or (preferably)abroad.What will I offer you?
I like doctoral students to develop their own work with as much freedom as possible. Although I will select the general topic in which you will be conducting your research, you will be free to design and plan your experiments. The group is internationally competitive in the field.
You will be the first one interested in producing as many results as possible, because, in addition to everything else, your fellowship will be finished after THREE years.Salary:
The total amount for the fellowship has been fixed by the granting agency at 36000 € (6.000.000 PTA) for the whole three years.Starting date:
You should join the laboratory as soon as the funds become available (I would estimate sometime during early 2002).Other information:
You will be working at a top level research institution, the CNB, half way between Madrid and the Sierra de Guadarrama.
The group has a high degree of personal interaction and cooperation.
